Alberta Oil Pipelines Go Where in 2025

Alberta has several major oil pipelines that transport crude oil from the province to various destinations. As of 2023, the total pipeline design capacity to move oil from the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin to outside markets was approximately 4,690,000 barrels per day.

Here are the main oil pipelines out of Alberta and their destinations:

Enbridge Mainline System This pipeline system, which includes the Alberta Clipper pipeline, transports crude oil from Hardisty, Alberta, to eastern destinations in Canada.

TC Energy Keystone Pipeline The Keystone Pipeline System runs from Alberta to refineries in Illinois and Texas, as well as to oil tank farms and an oil pipeline distribution center in Cushing, Oklahoma.

Trans Mountain Pipeline The Trans Mountain Pipeline carries crude and refined products from Edmonton, Alberta, to the coast of British Columbia. With the recent expansion completed in May 2024, its capacity increased from 300,000 to 890,000 barrels per day.

Enbridge Express Pipeline This pipeline delivers crude oil from Hardisty, Alberta, to the U.S. Rocky Mountains region.

Southern Lights Pipeline While not an oil export pipeline, the Southern Lights pipeline imports condensate from Manhattan, Illinois, to Edmonton, Alberta.

It's worth noting that the recent expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline (TMX) in May 2024 has significantly increased the capacity to transport Alberta's crude oil to Canada's west coast. This expansion allows for more direct exports to Pacific Ocean buyers, reducing reliance on U.S. Gulf Coast routes for seaborne exports.

These pipelines play a crucial role in transporting Alberta's oil to refineries and markets across North America and, increasingly, to international destinations via coastal terminals.
